How to stay away from “Flight or Fight”

Slowing down and being in the moment is quite a difficult task when we are constantly rushing around trying to check off our never-ending to-do list. It is important to relax and slow down as often as we can because it is crucial for our health and wellbeing.

The more that we are stressed and overwhelmed the longer we stay in our “flight or fight” state which increases our adrenalin levels, never actually allowing us to calm down. When you are in this heightened emotional state, you:

·      Feel jittery

·      Are on high alert

·      Are unable to keep still

·      Have quick, shallow breathing in your chest

·      Are unable to concentrate properly

There is one very simple solution to get your body and mind out of the “flight or fight” state. It is BREATHING. All you need to do is change the way you are breathing in the present moment.

As mentioned earlier, when you are stressed your breathing will quicken and each breath becomes shorter and shorter. The first thing you need to do is:

1.     Stop and notice that you are shallow breathing.

2.     Gently, place your hands on your belly.

3.     Take a slow, deep breath in and feel your belly rise.

4.     Count to 5 as you are breathing in.

5.     Slowly exhale and feel your hands sink with your belly.

6.     Count to 5 as you are breathing out.

7.     Repeat these steps 3 times or until you become relaxed.

By focusing on your breath, you are bringing yourself out of your overthinking mind and into the present moment. This helps you separate from the sensations and emotions linked with the thoughts and gives you a moment to relax (quite literally).

When you feel overwhelmed or on high alert just remember to breathe deeply into your belly. Your body will thank you as this encourages a higher immune system and a better hormone balance therefore allowing you to be ready to take on the next activity with optimal health.

Be mindful and look after yourself.
