How to Boost your Mood

We all have good days and bad days but let’s face it, there are days in between that just feel meh! Whether it is because you are lacking energy, didn’t get a great sleep or just feel overwhelmed with life, there are many reasons to feel flat! And that is completely okay! I’m going to repeat that for those at the back, IT IS COMPLETELY OKAY!

When you are feeling flat, everyday tasks can feel too hard or you just lack motivation to do anything productive. I’m here to share a few mindfulness tips to help you flip the flat feeling.

1.     First of all, identify how you are feeling. Just check in with yourself. Your current thoughts and actions can give you a great indicator of how you are feeling in the present moment.

2.     Just sit with that feeling for a little moment. Notice how your body and mind feels. This could range from feeling foggy, a headache, sore limbs, lethargic or an overwhelmed brain. Whatever pops up for you, just notice it.

3.     Imagine all those pains, worries and feelings that do not serve you right now just float away and disappear. You can get creative with this visualisation; try a guided meditation from YouTube or an app that runs through a body scan, practice some deep mindful breathing or try some mindful stretching while you practice your visualisation. The point is to pick a mindful activity that interests you and let it be your prompt that helps to boost your mood.

4.     List three things you are grateful for in this very moment. This list can be written in a gratitude journal or just listed mentally. By practicing gratitude, you are literally focusing on the positive things in your life. It shifts your perspective from a negative to a positive mindset which is an instant mood booster.

5.     Lastly, be kind to yourself! Give yourself grace through the rough moments in life. Support yourself like you would support a friend. You deserve it, because you are doing a wonderful job.

When you are feeling low, let yourself have moment and then take the steps to try and flip your outlook. If you have tried these steps or similar steps and you still can’t seem to boost your mood, reach out and ask for help! There is always somebody there to help you; a partner, family, friends or even a health care professional.

However you are feeling and for whatever reason, ultimately you need to be kind to yourself. You’ve got this.
