Head and Heart Mindfulness is a NESA endorsed provider to deliver professional development to teachers at the Proficient Teacher Level.
This approved course, Mindfulness is Education, addresses Standard 4.4.2 - Ensure students’ wellbeing and safety within school by implementing school and/ or system, curriculum and legislative requirements, and Standard 6.2.2 - Participate in learning to update knowledge and practice targeted to professional needs and school and/or system priorities. Participants will gain 3.5hrs towards their NESA approved training hours by attending this training.
All teachers can benefit from our Mindfulness in Education course. Research has shown that by practising and delivering mindful based activities, teachers' stress, anxiety and level of burnout can be reduced. We would like to make this opportunity and experience available to all educators e.g. Early childhood and primary teachers, including directors, executive staff and principals.
During this course teachers will learn about:
- mindfulness (MF) and of its history and background
- why MF is important and current statistics relating to mental health and the benefits of practising MF
- various components of MF and how they can incorporate them into their classrooms and into their own personal life/self-care
-MF links to curriculum and department documentation
- MF in practice
- creating quality MF lesson plans and delivering one to a small group
- analysing scenarios to apply appropriate and relevant MF strategies to support a range of diverse student needs
Current research shows that 1 in 7 school aged children have a mental health condition and half of all mental health conditions emerge by 14 years of age. If children are struggling emotionally and mentally, they cannot learn, pay attention, make decisions, solve problems, listen, focus, follow rules or interact appropriately - they cannot function to their full potential. We cannot expect children to learn when they are suffering from stress, anxiety, poor emotional regulation or over stimulation.
Research by John Kabat-Zinn (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction founder), Neuroscientists, Mindful Schools (American based company) and Head and Heart Mindfulness have demonstrated that:
- mindfulness (MF) and meditation can lessen these (above) statistics by decreasing stress/anxiety and improving wellbeing.
- MF practice is associated with brain changes. It can deactivate the amygdala and strengthen the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex, therefore create positive changes in well-being and emotional regulation.
- MF improves positive results for cognitive functioning, social-emotional skills and general well-being
Upon completion of this course, teachers will gain knowledge, resources ( Be Calm, Be Happy 30 Day Workbook for Women, Gratitude Diary, Mindful Living Essentials online course and 12 months access to our Exclusive Online Resource Library) and confidence to deliver MF effectively and efficiently in their schools/services to support children's development, wellbeing and growth as individuals and learners.
